The Private House

The Private House Review

The Private House

"Buy The Private House" Overview

“There are those who spend lifetimes in houses that have nothing to do with who they really are. They may be perfectly designed, yet if they fail to reflect the personalities of the people who live in them, the very essence of intimacy is missing and this absence is disturbingly visible.”
—From “a window inside”

One of the most influential designers working in America today, Rose Tarlow knows that creating a truly beautiful room is as much an emotional matter as it is one of color, light, fabric, and furniture. In The Private House, she offers insights into the mind of a master designer—as well as a glimpse into some of the extraordinary homes she’s decorated.
Drawing upon her wealth of experience as an antiquaire and a designer, Ms. Tarlow discusses and illustrates simple principles of creative design that are appropriate to any home. Always arrange your comfortable, upholstered furniture first, she writes; pay special attention to how light affects your spaces; and use carpets as background only, never as the focus of a room.

With chapters on lighting, fabrics, color, and intimate spaces, Ms. Tarlow encourages readers to plan and decorate each area of their house with elegance and personal style, covering all the essential elements of design—including the emotional ones. The result should be a house that welcomes family and friends, one that enhances our quality of life. You will not be disappointed with The Private House

INTIMUS: Interior Design Theory Reader

INTIMUS: Interior Design Theory Reader Review

INTIMUS: Interior Design Theory Reader

"Buy INTIMUS: Interior Design Theory Reader" Overview

Walter Benjamin observed in his writings on the interior that 'to live means to leave traces.' This interior design theory reader focuses on just how such traces might manifest themselves. In order to explore interior design's links to other disciplines, the selected texts reflect a wide range of interests extending beyond the traditional confines of design and architecture. It is conceived as a matrix, which intersects social, political, psychological, philosophical, technological and gender discourse, with practice issues, such as materials, lighting, colour, furnishing, and the body. The anthology presents a complex and sometimes conflicting terrain, while also creating a distinct body of knowledge particular to the interior. Locating theory on the interior through these multifarious sources, it encourages future discourse in an area often marginalised but now emerging in its own right.

Within the reader individual excerpts are referenced to their place in the matrix and sequenced alphabetically. This organising strategy resists both a chronological and themed structure in order to provoke associations and inferences between excerpts. In this way the book offers the possibility of examining the interior from multiple vantage points: a disciplinary focus, the spatial and physical attributes of interiors, historical sequence, and topical issue based. Excerpts from Thomas Hope, Catherine E. Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe, Edith Wharton and Charles Eastlake provide contemporary nineteenth century accounts as the profession emerges, whereas Barbara Penner, Penny Sparke, Charles Rice, Georges Teyssot and Rebecca Houze offer re-interpretations of this period. The complexities of the twentieth-century interior are revealed by Robyn Longhurst, Kevin Melchionne, George Wagner, John Macgregor Wise, Joel Sanders and many others. You will not be disappointed with INTIMUS: Interior Design Theory Reader

Outrageous Yachts

Outrageous Yachts Review

Outrageous Yachts

"Buy Outrageous Yachts" Overview

Owning a yacht is the ultimate status symbol. Universally perceived as the exclusive domain of the rich and the famous, yachting is a decidedly rarified world. Arguably the most well-known private yacht of all time, the 325-foot (99-meter) Christina O, owned by Aristotle Onassis in the 1950s and 60s, was the playground for heads of state such as Winston Churchill and the Kennedys, opera diva Maria Callas, and Hollywood sweethearts such as Ava Gardner and Elizabeth Taylor. Pictured here along with the newly rebuilt Christina O are 20 other mega-yachts, including the newly completed and wildly colorful Guilty, designed by Jeff Koons for the art collector Dakis Joannou; Tom Perkins’ modern sailing yacht Maltese Falcon, the ultramodern sailing yacht Esense, and the refit classic Delphine.

The yachts pictured here are special for many reasons: because they are the fastest, or the most innovative, or the most technologically advanced, or because of their travels to exotic locations around the globe. Outrageous Yachts provides information about the yachts’ builders and designers, and tours each of the magnificent vessels— ranging in size from 138 to 424 feet (42 to 129 meters)—from stem to stern. This volume promises to be irresistible to anyone who has a yacht or dreams of owning one.
Notes:
Annual maintenance usually runs to 15 percent of the cost of a yacht
Today there are approximately 6,000 yachts that exceed 100 feet (31 meters) in the world

Victorian House Style: An Architectural and Interior Design Source Book Review

Victorian House Style: An Architectural and Interior Design Source Book

"Buy Victorian House Style: An Architectural and Interior Design Source Book" Overview

Whether you wish to restore a period Victorian house, or simply recreate the intimate splendour of the period, this comprehensive book will show you how. Drawing on original catalogue material, Victorian House Style features many specially commissioned colour photographs of modern 'Victorian' interiors. This material helps shed light on the many artistic influences on Victorian style, and provides a pictorial social history of domestic life at the end of the 19th century. After looking at the development of the Victorian house and the main architectural styles that evolved, further chapters examine the design potential of the various structural features. The author looks at doors and windows, halls and staircases, cornices and ceiligs. Victorian style in individual rooms, from living rooms and kitchens to bathrooms and bedrooms is also explored in detail. Together with the facade and the garden, these rooms are examined in terms of how they would have been then, and how that look can be recreated now by using a combination of contemporary artefacts and modern reproduction furniture and fittings. Taking into account the requirements of the modern-day home, this book offers both practical advice and inspiration which will enable you to strike your own balance between Victorian style and twentieth-century living. You will not be disappointed with Victorian House Style: An Architectural and Interior Design Source Book

The Pattern in the Carpet: A Personal History with Jigsaws Feature

  • Memoir

"Buy The Pattern in the Carpet: A Personal History with Jigsaws" Overview

The Pattern in the Carpet: A Personal History with Jigsaws is an original and brilliant work. Margaret Drabble weaves her own story into a history of games, in particular jigsaws, which have offered her and many others relief from melancholy and depression. Alongside curious facts and discoveries about jigsaw puzzles — did you know that the 1929 stock market crash was followed by a boom in puzzle sales? — Drabble introduces us to her beloved Auntie Phyl, and describes childhood visits to the house in Long Bennington on the Great North Road, their first trip to London together, the books they read, the jigsaws they completed. She offers penetrating sketches of her parents, her siblings, and her children; she shares her thoughts on the importance of childhood play, on art and writing, on aging and memory. And she does so with her customary intelligence, energy, and wit. This is a memoir like no other.

"Reading Margaret Drabble's novels has become something of a rite of passage...Sharply observed, exquisitely companionable tales of women of a certain age and class, educated, egocentric, strong, unlucky in love."
(Washington Post )

"Margaret Drabble will have done for late twentieth-century London what Dickens did for Victorian London."
(New York Times )

"Drabble's fiction has achieved a panoramic vision of contemporary life."

Alexa Hampton: The Language of Interior Design

"Buy Alexa Hampton: The Language of Interior Design" Overview

At an early age, Alexa Hampton learned the language of good design, the vocabulary to speak it, and the elements that define it. As the daughter of interior design legend Mark Hampton, she traveled the world by her father’s side, touring the great architectural landmarks and discovering beauty, training her eye.

Now one of America’s most influential designers herself, Alexa Hampton provides a tour of stunning residences from her own portfolio.

Eighteen classic spaces illustrate in rich detail the elements that govern cultivated design—contrast, proportion, color, and balance. Among the residences are a landmark 1912 McKim, Mead & White restoration on Fifth Avenue in New York City; an eclectic house by the sea layered in textures, patterns, and colors; a contemporary apartment distinguished by simple geometry and clean lines; and Hampton’s own apartment, filled with an exquisite collection of architectural elements.

Hampton also explains how she tailored each space to meet her clients’ needs while retaining a timeless aesthetic, and she provides design expertise on everything from fabric schemes to the particulars of paint. From a French neoclassical tour de force of architec-ture, artwork, and design to a Queen Anne summer cottage furnished to showcase the house’s graceful nineteenth-century dimensions, the spaces here speak the language of design—a language that, under Hampton’s tutelage, anyone can master.
